چکیده

We demonstrate that the probability of the crayfish, P. clarkii, to tail flip in response to a touch on the dorsal tail fan is dependent on both the size and the behavioral state of the animal. Alterations in the animal's internal physical state, such as when the animal autotomizes its chelipeds, will cause larger-sized animals to tail flip; if they were not autotomized, then no tail flip response would occur. Altering the external environment by removal of water causes small crayfish, which normally habituate slowly, to rapidly habituate. Observation of large adult crayfish in a species, O. australis packardi, one that evolved to live in total cave darkness, revealed that they are more likely to tail flip than are the sighted, adult P. clarkii. Results indicate that the behavioral state of the crayfish can result in rapid and long-term alterations in the tail flip response and in habituation rates to repetitive stimuli. This ability to show plasticity in gain setting may be regulated by neuromodulators and can occur in large adults of the sighted crayfish. Differences between the two species indicate that size may not be the sole contributing factor to account for tail flip behaviors. J. Exp. Zool. 290:163-176, 2001.

Novelty stress and reproductive state alters responsiveness to sensory stimuli and 5-HT neuromodulation in crayfish.

Sensory stimuli can produce varied responses depending on the physiological state of an animal. Stressors and reproductive stage can result in altered biochemical status that changes the responsiveness of an animal to hormones and neuromodulators, which affects whole animal behavior in relation to sensory stimuli. Crayfish serve as a model for examining the effects of neuromodulators at the neu...

Social status-dependent modulation of LG-flip habituation in the crayfish.

Strong stimuli applied to the tailfan of the crayfish Procambarus clarkii evoked lateral giant interneurone (LG)-mediated tailflips. When the sensory stimulus was applied repeatedly, the response of the LG habituated until it failed to give rise to a spike. We found that this LG-flip habituation was dependent on social status. With a short interstimulus interval of 5 s, the rate of habituation ...

Crayfish escape behavior and central synapses. 3. Electrical junctions and dendrite spikes in fast flexor motoneurons.

THE LATERAL giant fiber is the decision fiber for a behavioral response in crayfish involving rapid tail flexion in response to abdominal tactile stimulation (27). Each lateral giant impulse is followed by a rapid tail flexion or tail flip, and when the giant fiber does not fire in response to such stimuli, the movement does not occur. The afferent limb of the reflex exciting the lateral giant ...

Rostral ganglia are required for induction but not expression of crayfish escape reflex habituation: role of higher centers in reprogramming low-level circuits.

It is widely assumed that learning results from alterations in the strength of synapses within the neural pathways that mediate a learned behavioral response and that these alterations are directly caused by training-induced activity of neurons connected by the changing synapses. Initial evidence for this view came from studies of habituation of defensive reflexes in several invertebrate specie...

Escape behavior and escape circuit activation in juvenile crayfish during prey-predator interactions.

The neural systems that control escape behavior have been studied intensively in several animals, including mollusks, fish and crayfish. Surprisingly little is known, however, about the activation and the utilization of escape circuits during prey-predator interactions. To complement the physiological and anatomical studies with a necessary behavioral equivalent, we investigated encounters betw...
